Command: Take courage

John 16:33 (NASB95)

These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world

John 13:1 – 16:33

Story: Jesus calms the sea

Mark 4:35-41 (NASB95)

35On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. 38Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

Acts 23:11 (NASB95) But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, “Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also.

2 Corinthians 5:6-9 (NASB95)  6Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith, not by sight— 8we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. 9Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.

When meditating on the commands and stories, keep these questions in mind:

  • What do I learn about God, Jesus, and/or the Holy Spirit?
  • What do I learn about man/ people?
  • What troubles or bothers me? What does the Holy Spirit reveal to me in light of this?
  • How does the command connect to the story?
  • What is God saying to me (or what should I obey) & what am I going to do about it?
  • Do I have any fears, doubts, or resistance in keeping this command?
  • What does this command reveal about the condition of my heart – what do I really believe and
    what do I really want?
