Command: Follow Me

John 21: 19, 22 (NASB95)

19Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me!”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

John 21:1-23 (NASB95)

Story: Elisha follows Elijah

1 Kings 19: 19-21

19So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him. 20He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” 21So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him. (full story: 1 Kings 18:20 – 19:21)

Philippians 2:5

5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

1 Peter 2:21 -25

21For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22WHO COMMITTED NO SINNOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH23and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

When meditating on the commands and stories, keep these questions in mind:

  • What do I learn about God, Jesus, and/or the Holy Spirit?
  • What do I learn about man/ people?
  • What troubles or bothers me? What does the Holy Spirit reveal to me in light of this?
  • How does the command connect to the story?
  • What is God saying to me (or what should I obey) & what am I going to do about it?
  • Do I have any fears, doubts, or resistance in keeping this command?
  • What does this command reveal about the condition of my heart – what do I really believe and what do I really want?
